Macmahon has been engaged by Main Roads Western Australia to extend Perth’s Mitchell Freeway by approximately four kilometres, from Hodges Drive to Burns Beach Road, through the City of Joondalup.
A ground-breaking ceremony in December 2006 marked the start of construction on this $171.5 million project. The development is scheduled for completion in mid 2008 and is the first extension to Mitchell Freeway since the section terminating at Hodges Drive, Heathridge, was completed in 2001. View the latest schedule.
Major works include:
- construction of a sophisticated freeway-standard road, comprising two lanes in each direction, with capacity to expand to three lanes;
- completion of the existing interchange at Hodges Drive and construction of new interchanges at Shenton Avenue and Burns Beach Road;
- bridges over the freeway at Hodges Drive, Shenton Avenue and Moore Drive;
- a pedestrian overpass between Winton Road, on the eastern side of the freeway, and Fairway Circle, near Connolly Primary School, on the western side of the freeway;
- a Principal Shared Path along the eastern side of the freeway, crossing at Moore Drive and continuing northwards;
- a tunnel south of Moore Drive enabling the existing passenger railway to be relocated from the western side of the freeway reserve to the freeway median. The railway will pass under the freeway’s southbound lanes via the tunnel, into the median and north to Currambine Station;
- noise walls to protect residents on both sides of the freeway;
- extensive landscaping along both sides of the freeway extension.
Benefits of the Project
Extension of the freeway is designed to efficiently service the rapidly growing northern suburbs of Connolly, Currambine, Kinross, Clarkson, Iluka, Carramar and Joondalup, helping to ease congestion on local roads, improve safety and reduce travel time and cost. It is an important advance in the metropolitan area’s transport infrastructure that will encourage further residential and commercial development and stimulate the local economy by providing easy access to the heart of Joondalup and surrounding suburbs.
