The Joondalup community turned out in force to celebrate the opening of two important landmarks on the new Mitchell Freeway extension.
The Moore Drive traffic bridge and Portmarnock footbridge were officially opened in October by Main Roads WA Executive Director of Infrastructure Delivery Phil Ladner and Joondalup MLA Tony O’Gorman.
The footbridge was designed with significant input from the community and reflects the cooperation and teamwork that has helped the project set a new benchmark for public participation.
The development is the first in WA to win a prestigious Australasian Award from the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) which recognises the extent to which community views have infl uenced the multi-million dollar project.
IAP2 is a global non-profit organisation which promotes public participation and better civic decision-making across all national, cultural, and religious boundaries. Founded in the US in 1990, the organisation has 19 international chapters, the largest of which was formed in Australia in 1998.
