Creative Nature Builds WA's first Online Water Education Tool

May 04, 2009

Western Australia’s first online catalogue of water learning resources, built by Creative Nature Communications, was officially launched today by students at Applecross Senior high school.

Designed for teachers and students from kindergarten to Year 12, the new Water Education Tools website is an interactive multimedia portal that brings together resources, from a range of water stakeholders, in a single portal accessible through the department’s new website.

The Water Education Tools offers different pathways to help teachers and students find the resources they need quickly and easily.  Students can search by year, group or topic while teaching resources are catalogued and linked directly to the curriculum.  Resources are clustered by topic and and indexed to a relevant year group.

The catalogue includes a range of different resources like downloads, posters, activities and video.  The topics cover a wide range of contemporary topics from water recycling and groundwater management to climate change. Initially the majority of resources will be more suitable for high school students, but the number and spread of resources will continue to grow throughout the year.

Both the new Department of Water website and the Water Education Tools was developed and designed by Creative Nature Communications.

Launching the project at Applecross Senior High School, Minister for Water Dr Graham Jacobs said that the resource was an important step forward in stimulating interest and improving knowledge about the important role water plays in the environment.

“This is an exciting project that breaks down the barriers to accessing information, and will help our students gain a greater understanding of the critical issues surrounding the future of water in Australia,” Dr Jacobs said.

"Engaging young people to help them learn more about water and providing teacher resources that link water issues to the curriculum will elevate the quality of water education in the state.”

The Water Education Tools was developed by Creative Nature Communications for the the Department of Water with guidance from the Curriculum Council and the Department of Education and Training.
